While the audition and placement process can feel overwhelming, understanding how the placement activities work, especially for popular programs like Visual Arts (Grades 7 through 12) and Design & Media (Grades 9 through 12), can help turn anxiety into excitement.
Below is a breakdown of what OCSA judges are looking for and how you can guide your young artist to success.
What Happens During the OCSA Placement Activity?
OCSA’s application process isn't just about handing in past school projects. The school asks applicants to respond directly to specific artwork prompts, participate in live timed sessions, and present a real world sketchbook.
Here is what the Visual Arts and Design & Media Conservatory guidelines require:
1. Digital Portfolio Prompts (Submitted Online)
Applicants upload three distinct prompt responses directly into their application portal:
Design & Media Prompts:
6 Panel Comic: An original, 6 panel story featuring original characters with at least one panel showing a fully developed environment or background.
Superhero Self Portrait with Pet Sidekick: A dynamic, full body design showcasing character superpowers, clever color choices, and shape language.
Free Choice Artwork: A piece created independently that reflects the student's personal skills, interests, and style.
Visual Arts Prompts:
Favorite Sweet Treat: A color drawing or painting of a favorite dessert including realistic details like wrappers, utensils, packaging, and cast shadows.
Superhero Self Portrait with Pet Sidekick: A dynamic, full body character design in full color, highlighting posture, hands, feet, and expression.
20 Minute Water Bottle Challenge & Video: A live, unedited 20 minute video showing the student drawing a transparent water bottle or glass from real life observation using a #2 graphite pencil, showing cast shadows and tonal shading.
2. The In Person Placement Activity & Interview
After submitting the digital application, candidates visit the OCSA campus for a 90 minute small group session:
30 Minute Group Interview: A relaxed conversation with faculty where students express their passion and share their creative vision.
60 Minute Live Drawing Challenge: Applicants are given traditional drawing tools on site to complete a secret prompt announced in the room.
The Sketchbook Requirement: Students must bring a personal sketchbook to show their artistic process. It doesn't need to be complete, but it should showcase observational sketches, story ideas, and personal inspiration.
Parent Tip: Make sure your child’s in person drawing skill matches their uploaded digital submission! OCSA explicitly notes that if a noticeable skill gap exists between the portfolio and the live draw, more weight (or sole weight) will be given to the in person performance.

1. Master Drawing from Real Life
Copying photos or drawing from memory is fine for fun, but OCSA heavily tests observational drawing. Encourage your child to set real objects (like a clear glass, shoes, or fruits) on a table and practice capturing real light, form, and cast shadows within set time limits.
2. Teach Time Management Under Pressure
The 20 minute water bottle recording and the 60 minute live challenge can intimidate young artists who are used to taking days on a single artwork. Practice timed drawing sprints at home using traditional graphite pencils.
3. Focus on Storytelling and Fundamentals
For both Design & Media and Visual Arts, evaluators want to see shape language, dynamic poses, and clear visual narrative, not just pretty pictures. Help your child think about why a character poses a certain way or how a comic panel moves the reader’s eye.
