Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: Portfolio Scholarships and How to Prepare a Winning Portfolio
For young artists, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards offer an exciting opportunity to showcase creativity, gain recognition, and compete for scholarship opportunities. For graduating high school seniors, the Portfolio Awards provide an additional incentive to develop a thoughtful, cohesive collection of artwork that reflects their artistic growth, vision, and potential.
With the right preparation, students can turn their creative work into a compelling portfolio that highlights not only their technical abilities but also their unique perspectives and personal stories.
What Are the Scholastic Portfolio Scholarships?
Made possible by generous donors, the Scholastic Portfolio Awards offer scholarships to students whose portfolios demonstrate exceptional artistic achievement.
Gold Medal Portfolio: $12,500 scholarship
Silver Medal Portfolio: $2,000 scholarship
These awards recognize students who demonstrate creativity, technical skill, originality, and a strong artistic voice through a carefully curated collection of work.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Graduating high school seniors submitting a portfolio of six works may be eligible for consideration. Students must include the required statements and select either Art Portfolio or Writing Portfolio as their application category.
Applicants are required to submit two written components:
1. Artist or Writer Statement
The Artist or Writer Statement explains the creative thinking behind the portfolio. Students should describe how they selected their works, what connects the pieces, and why the collection represents their artistic vision.
The statement must be between 100 and 500 words and will be visible to jurors. Students should avoid including identifying personal information.
A strong artist statement does more than describe individual pieces. It helps jurors understand the ideas, themes, experimentation, and creative decisions that bring the portfolio together.
2. Personal Statement
The Personal Statement gives students an opportunity to share their story. Applicants should describe a meaningful life experience that demonstrates their character or helped shape who they are today.
This statement must also be between 100 and 500 words. If a student's work receives a Gold Key and advances for consideration for a national portfolio scholarship, the scholarship committee will review the Personal Statement.
A thoughtful personal statement can help communicate the experiences, motivations, and values behind a student's creative journey.
What Makes a Strong Competition Portfolio?
A successful portfolio is about more than producing six beautiful pieces. Each work should contribute to a larger story about the student's interests, abilities, and artistic development.
When preparing a portfolio for Scholastic or other art competitions, students should focus on:
Cohesion and storytelling: Select works that connect through a theme, concept, visual language, or creative investigation.
Technical proficiency: Demonstrate an understanding of composition, color, perspective, materials, and other relevant artistic techniques.
Originality and personal voice: Explore ideas that reflect individual interests, experiences, and perspectives.
Experimentation and growth: Show curiosity, thoughtful problem-solving, and a willingness to explore new approaches.
Presentation and refinement: Review each piece carefully to ensure the portfolio is polished, intentional, and ready for submission.
Strong written statements: Clearly communicate the ideas behind the work and the experiences that have shaped the artist.
Students should also review the current competition rules, eligibility requirements, submission deadlines, and portfolio guidelines before applying.
